I'm sorry to hear that Brearley has doubled down on DEI. But the anti-DEI movement is making headway elsewhere. Enrollment is down and fundraising has faltered at schools like Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day school in Chicago that embraced a radical DEI/gender pedagogy. The Latin School of Chicago has also posted very bad numbers for fundraising, year over year after the suicide of a student whose family has launched multiple lawsuits against the school. The Shipley School in Philadelphia is also getting a ton of pushback from Jewish parents disgusted at the double standard of DEI. The "smart" money says that DEI is waning - as also evidenced by corporations firing that group of folks because it turns out that they add no value. I'm not suggesting there isn't a battle ahead - there is and many schools remain woke and social justice oriented. I do think we have hit peak "DEI" though and the counterculture is punching back and punching back hard.
I also agree that the winds are changing and we need to telecast and project wins now too. I think it is extremely important to continue to highlight the insanity (because it is reality) but now also broadcast the wins! Get confident! Get confident and positive! This is the juncture we are at now and if we broadcast the wins people will become less afraid to speak up and it will cascade-will grow and grow with faster momentum.
People like Andrew broke the malaise, broke the silence, did the absolute hardest most courageous part of the fight and now the rest of us can be emboldened to "speak up for education".
We must change political leadership from top to bottom. And that means breaking the knee jerk reaction to vote along party lines and vote for the policies espoused by candidates. We have precious little choice on both sides of the aisle but we need to demand better.
